FOOTBALL:
Although the game against Jesuit was not titled “Holy Bowl” the CB Varsity football team went out with the same intensity as if it was Holy Bowl. Jesuit led CB most of the game, but in the 4th quarter CB tied the score to take it into overtime. It was a battle to the finish, but unfortunately, CB lost the game in OT 34-28. QB Jake Elorduy ’22 threw for 258 yards, Senior Bryan Garrett started CB off with their first TD of the night. RB DJ Crowther ‘22 not only rushed for 208 yards, he also scored the remaining 3 touchdowns. Sophomore WR Jared “Jet” Wiley didn’t hold back either, he led the team in receiving yards with 143 yards. Our defensive player of the night was Lemisio Vaea ’21 who led the team with 14 total tackles. Next up – El Camino at El Camino at 7:00 on Thursday April 1, 2021.
GIRLS TENNIS:
The Lady Falcons wrapped up the final week of their season with a dramatic return to the top of the Capital Athletic League. The girls started the week hot (powered by Coach Gil’s fabled salsa) and finished even hotter.
The week started with a dominating shutout at El Camino on Tuesday. On the singles side, Lena Mikacich '22 (4-0, 4-2), Ai-Linh Tran '21 (4-1, 4-2), Lola Jan '21 (4-1, 4-3 (7-5)), Jamie Ancog '23 (4-1, 4-3 (7-1)), Mariana Garcia '21 (4-0, 4-0), and Sophia Garcia '23 (4-1, 4-0) all prevailed without losing a set.
The same story played out on the doubles side as Ashley Ancog '23 and Simone LeForestier '22 (4-1,4-1), as well as Harper Barankin '24 and Sofia Jordana '24 (4-0, 4-2), completed the sweep and set the stage for the most important match of the year.
On Thursday, Christian Brothers traveled to Gold River for a rematch with undefeated Rio Americano – the only team to beat the Lady Falcons this year – with the league championship on the line.
The battle lived up to expectations as both teams went back and forth on the hottest day of the year. Senior Fiona Babcock '21 (4-2, 4-2) got the girls off to a fast start, while Bianca Cabanag '21 pushed her opponent to a third set before falling (4-1, 1-4, 3-10).
On the doubles side, just as they did in their first encounter with the Eagles, the Lady Falcons swept their matches. Emma Emigh '21 and LeForestier (4-3 (7-4), 4-2), Sophia Garcia and Ashley Ancog (4-1, 4-0), and Jamie Ancog and Jordana (4-0, 4-0) all winning.
With those victories wrapped up, everyone’s eyes turned to the battle of the top seeds on the singles side. In the longest match of the day Tessa Easterling '22 went to tiebreakers twice (4-3 (7-5), 4-3 (7-5) before winning the pivotal contest that provided a 5-4 victory.
In a year that featured so much change and uncertainty, the team relied on their training, their coaches and each other to clinch their spot as co-champions of the Capital Athletic League for the second straight season.
“We prepared from day one to defend our league title, and the girls seized the opportunity,” said Coach Sean Mar. “I’m so proud of everyone on the team, because they gave it everything they had and left it all on the court.”
A big thanks goes to everyone who helped the girls throughout the year, from the coaching staff to the parents and volunteers.
League Record: 9 - 1 (Final Record) - Co-Champions
