Bittersweet moments today at our last XC meet of what we weirdly refer to as the 2020-2021 season.
Jack O’Brien, Raphael Lobo, Evan Carrasco and Malia Gay ended their cross country experiences today, after four years at CB. The times didn’t really matter since losing these kids will definitely change the make up of the team. Their leadership, commitment, enthusiasm, and fun, will have a lasting impact on CBXC. They will be missed.
Along with these four, I would like to thank Shane Kasbergen and Jacob Schnetz as well for their commitment to XC even through the pandemic. Shane is the last in a long line of Kasbergen’s to run for CB and I would like to offer a hearty thanks to Jack, Ellie and the Kasbergen bunch for their years of commitment.
Although several runners were unable to attend today’s last race due to other commitments, the results were no less satisfying. In the F/S race, Nikos Burciaga (10) put on a last second sprint to win the 2 mile race for a second week in a row.
In the varsity race, Sami Bateman (11) had his hands full against a loaded Rio Americano varsity team. Despite the challenge, Sami finished third in the 5K race followed closely by teammates, Reign Saldana (9th grader) and Sam Nealon (9th grader). Along with Mbaria Chege, another 9th grader, this group shows promise for CB’s XC future. For the women, our two runners, Ava Turner (9th grade) and Allie Moya (10th Grader) held their own for CBXC. Allie, ran her fastest 5K ever by finishing in a personal best 19:05.
While it was a less than normal XC season, the results for these runners, fell right in line with what Sacramento has come to expect of CB RUNNERS. Congratulations to all the CB runners for another successful XC Season. Now...on to Track and Field.
Congratulations also, to 10th Grader, Allie Moya, for receiving Falcon of the Week honors. Allie was nominated for her academic success, her work ethic at practices, her success at meets, and her commitment to the sport. Once again, congratulations Allie!
The women’s tennis team entered this week with the marquee matchup of the young season on the schedule. The Lady Falcons hosted against Rio Americano on Tuesday, in a battle of undefeated teams. The matchup lived up to the billing, as the girls battled back-and-forth all afternoon, with four games going to tiebreakers.
The day’s toughest games took place on the singles side where the seniors battled down to the wire. Ai-Linh Tran '21 swept her matchup 4-2, 4-2 while Fiona Babcock '21, Bianca Cabanag '21 and Lola Jan '21 gave it all they had before falling in extra points.
The ladies fought back on the doubles side as the girls swept all three matches. The reigning Falcon of the Week, Simone LeForestier '22, teamed up with Emma Emigh '21 to win 4-1, 4-2. Sophia Garcia '23, partnered with her sister Mariana Garcia '21 to also win in straight sets 4-1, 4-2. Freshman Harper Barankin '24 and Sophomore Alessandra Salvini ’23 debuted in their first official match rounding out a doubles sweep with a grueling 4-3 (7-5), 4-3 (7-5) win.
While the team gave its best effort, the Lady Falcons lost in a 4-5 heartbreaker. We see you Rio, and the girls will be ready for the upcoming rematch.
Thursday’s match versus Del Campo was rained out and the Lady Falcons will be back on the court next week with a full schedule. The team is set to host Mira Loma on Tuesday, play Del Campo on Wednesday, and Vista Del Lago on Thursday.
Current Record: 3-1
Last Wednesday night The Lady Falcons traveled to Del Campo for the return of CIF soccer. As expected we had a little rust on the machine. It was a slow start but, in the 21 minute Sophomore (23)Lily Jensen started the 2021 campaign with CB’s first of 6 goals! What seemed like minutes later... Senior Captain (21)Lexi Rakela scored to put CB up 2-0. Those 2 goals seemed to open the goal gate and The Lady Falcons added additional goals, 2 from Junior (22)Grace Cloete, (21)Lexi Rakela added one more and Freshmen (24)Devin Greer made her debut with a start and a goal. Final score CB 6-0 Del Campo. Next up a Friday match up with Rio. This is a 3:30 kick off time.
Ahead of the on coming rain CB and Del Campo played Wednesday at Bing Maloney. The Falcons shot 199 to Del Campo's 274. The score of 199 has been a goal all season and represents the lowest match score in the last decade. This is one of the best women's golf teams ever and they still have matches and goals to reach.
Anna Horan '21, Team Co-Captain shot a season best 37. She was supported by Sophomore Nicole Stagg's 39 and Freshman Maddy McFall's 39 also. Cali Rapolla '23 and Co-Captain Bella Esquivel '21 added 42 to complete the 199 total.
This is a very difficult feat to break 200 in women's high school golf. The team has had a feeling that this goal was attainable and on a cold windy Wednesday they pulled together and did it as a team. CB plays Vista Del Lago at Bing next Tuesday, Vista is a very good team and will give the Falcons a very good match.
Way to go Falcons, let's do it again!
